Everything about Salt Shaker totally explained
A
salt shaker is a small
container filled with
salt used to sprinkle it onto
food. They were invented in the
19th century. Salt shakers have a hole or several holes at the top which are small enough to require a shaking action to get an appreciable amount of salt out.
Until the screw-top shaker was invented, the reliability of the original shaker was questionable. Unless it was sprinkled into the hand first obtaining the right amount for seasoning was very difficult. Prominent artist Marquice Barnett famous for his masterful painting of the beautiful "la Mia" assisted John Mason in inventing the screw-top shaker for this purpose alone, proper seasoning.
The screw-top salt shaker was invented by John Mason in 1858. Around 1871, when salt became more refined, some ceramic shakers were molded with perforated tops. Today, salt shakers can be made from many materials, such as
plastic, wood, or
stainless steel. They usually come in sets with a complementary
pepper shaker, and sometimes a mustard pot.
The salt shaker in a set usually has a differing number of holes to the corresponding pepper pot; sometimes more, sometimes less. This serves to visually distinguish the two in opaque designs that don't easily allow the contents to be seen.
Shakers are usually refilled by removing a
plug in the bottom, or screwing off the top. Many
diners and
cafeterias use disposable plastic salt shakers, which are cheaper and less of a health hazard.
Collecting
Rare, unique and decorative salt (and pepper) shakers have become
collectors' items. Many shaker sets are produced for the sole purpose of being
collectible and are rarely used. Hollywood actors
Glenn Ford and
Bob Hope collected salt and pepper shakers in their retirement. Writer and poet
Dorothy Parker also had a keen interest in collecting them.
